Never Look Away
(Germany/2018—directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck)
The new film from the director of the Oscar® winning The Lives of Others is a sweeping, intimate epic inspired by the life of renowned contemporary artist Gerhard Richter. The Richter character, here named Kurt (played as an adult by Tom Schilling), is exposed as a child to the Nazis’ “Degenerate Art” exhibition in 1937.
Indelibly affected and fascinated by what he sees, Kurt later works as painter of propaganda posters in postwar East Germany, struggling to make sense of the traumatic horrors of his youth as well as the horrific totalitarian system now surrounding him, yet never giving up on the dream of expressing himself freely through his art.
Visually rich and emotionally complex, Never Look Away is Germany’s Foreign Language submission to this year’s Academy Awards®. (188 min.)
“An epic, intergenerational tale of art, love, tragedy and politics, spanning three turbulent decades of 20th-century history.” -Jessica Kiang, Variety
