Night School

(USA/2016—directed by Andrew Cohn)

Filmed in Indianapolis, a city with one of the lowest high school graduation rates in the nation, this documentary introduces us to three African-American adults who all – despite a variety of personal setbacks as well as a broken education system – are determined to better their lives by resuming their pursuit of high school diplomas. Greg, Melissa and Shynika are concerned that a GED may not be enough; they want the opportunities they believe will come with a regular diploma. And while each of their journeys is individual and distinct, the systemic, poverty-induced obstacles these three face are widespread. The fierce determination of so many adults to overcome those challenges is an inspiring and all-too-rarely told story. Tribeca Film Festival. (85 min.)

“Bracing and sobering. A wonderfully trenchant and moving documentary.” -David Noh, Film Journal
