The Other Side of Hope
(Finland/Germany/2017—directed by Aki Kaurismäki)
The first feature in six years from Aki Kaurismäki, Finland’s grand master of comic melancholy (Man Without a Past, Leningrad Cowboys Go America), is the tale of two hapless refugees who meet in a Helsinki holding cell, unaware that at the same time, a middle-aged travelling shirt salesman is fleeing his miserable marriage to try his hand at the restaurant business. At his dive of an establishment – The Golden Pint – these three lives will come together in a series of richly comic, unexpectedly moving surprises. Though timely in subject and brimming with Kaurismäki’s deadpan humanism, The Other Side of Hope might come to be best known for the most hilarious sushi scene in movie history. Best Director Prize, Berlin Film Festival; Spirit of Freedom Award, Jerusalem Film Festival. In Finnish, English, Arabic and Swedish with English subtitles. (100 min.)
“A buoyant, gorgeous, bittersweet comedy-drama with a marvelous cast. A must-visit destination.” -David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
