TATM Virtual Tour: German Expressionist Painting of the DIA

The Detroit Institute of Arts has a special treasure in its German Expressionism collection. Works include paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and watercolors.

These works were created by artists throughout Germany in the early 20th century and focused on mankind's spiritual connection with the world. In search of a harmonious relationship between mankind and the environment, they expressed emotion through form and color. The expansion of industrialization and the growth of urban environments were seen in a negative light by this movement.
