Tea Time Theatre: Whisper of the Heart
(Japan/1995—directed by Yoshifumi Kondo)
Perusing books she has checked out from the library, Shizuku’s curiosity is piqued when she notices a boy’s name that appears before hers on the checkout card of each one. Through a series of magical incidents she establishes a connection to the boy – he has dreams of becoming a famous violinmaker, while she aspires to a writing career. This delicate, enchanting masterwork about the awakening of creativity was the only full-length feature completed by Yoshifumi Kondo, protégé of the great Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro), and is now regarded as one of the classics of Japanese anime.
