Inscribed, lower margin: L'heure de souper étant venue, on se mit à table, ou chacun des convives, agité de passions differentes, mangea peu et ne parla point. Virginie en sortit la premiere Paul la suivit bientôt | après. Il faisoit une de ces nuits délicieuses, si communes entre les tropiques; et dont le plus habite pinceau ne rendroit pas la beauté, La Lune paroissoit au milieu du firmament, entourée d'un rideau de | nuages que ses rayons dissipoient par degrés. Virginie apperçut à l'entrée du port une lumiere et une ombre: C'etoit le fanal et le corps du vaisseau ou elle devoit pour l'europe, et qui, prêt | à mettre à la voile, attendoit à l'ancre la fin du calme, à celle vue elle se troubla. Mlle de la tour, Marguerite etle Vieillard étoient à quelques pas de là, et dans le silence de la nuit, entendirent distinctement leur con- | versation après un long entretien, Virginie dit à Paul, « je voulois que du m'aidasses à me séparer de moi même jusqu'à ce que le ciel put bénir notre union maintenant, je reste, je pars, je meurs: fais de moi ce que | tu veux, fille sans vertu! j'ai pu résister à tes caresses, et je ne peux soutenir ta douleur! » à ces mots, Paul la saisit dans ses bras, et la tenant étroitement serrée, il s'ecria d'une voix terrible: « je pars avec elle: rien ne | pourra m'en détacher » tous coururent à lui. Mlle de la tour lui dit « mon fils, si vous nous quittés, qu'allons-nous devenir? »
